What are some tips for creating a physician job resume?

Resume 101

The first step to landing the right permanent physician job is an eye-catching resume. Whether it has been two years or 20 years since your last physician job search, the same resume rules apply.

To get your resume in good shape, follow these simple rules:

  • Be brief: Keep your resume to one page. It's hard, but try (definitely no more than two pages!). Remember that you don't need to put every job you have ever had—focus on the jobs that are relevant to the job you're seeking.
  • Accentuate the positive: Use active verbs to highlight the key tasks you have performed in different jobs, and include leadership positions.
  • Emphasize results: Without being too wordy, describe your experience in terms of results. For example, did you improve the quality of care at your hospital by participating in a protocol that reduced medical errors? Say so.
  • Start with the present: Top your resume with your most recent job and work backwards.

For physicians seeking employment, physician placement services can match the skills on your resume with physician job openings.
