Physician Recruiting 101: Know The Players

You've decided to enlist a physician recruiting service to help you get your next job. But it's important to know the differences among various physician recruiting organizations so you can make the best choice. A physician recruiter, also known as a headhunter or search consultant, is the person who will work with you on your job search through a physician placement service. A recruiter may contact you about a physician job, or you might send a resume to a physician recruiter for a position the recruiter is trying to fill. Know the difference between types of agencies before committing to just one.

  • Employment agency: This is any organization that helps match physicians with jobs. Some agencies charge the job seeker a fee, while others charge the employers, so be sure to choose an agency that doesn't charge a fee upfront.
  • Contingency agency: This type of agency gets paid when the job seeker gets hired, and it is usually involved in low-level to mid-level job searchers.
  • Retained search firm: This type of agency has an exclusive relationship with employers, and it is often involved in filling upper level or executive positions.
